President George W. Bush has nominated U.S. District Judge Philip P. Simon to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago.

In a group of six nominations sent to the U.S. Senate, the president chose Judge Simon to replace 7th Circuit Judge Kenneth Ripple, who's been on the federal appeals court since 1985 and has taken senior status.

Judge Simon has been in the Northern District of Indiana's Hammond Division since March 2003. The 1987 Indiana University School of Law – Bloomington graduate has worked in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District and served there as chief of the criminal division, and previously worked as an assistant federal prosecutor in Arizona. He also has specialized in commercial litigation matters during three years of private practice after law school.

Now, the Senate Judiciary Committee will consider the nomination before the full Senate receives his nomination for a vote. No timetable has been set.
