Lawyer sentenced on child porn case

Anderson attorney Samuel Hasler, who pled guilty to a pair of child pornography charges, has received a 151-month sentence, meaning he’ll spend more than 12 years behind bars and then face a lifetime of supervised release.

U.S. District Judge Larry McKinney in the Southern District of Indiana imposed the sentence Oct. 29, after accepting a plea agreement that Hasler had signed in May. The family law attorney resigned from the bar that month, and this sentencing now culminates a criminal case that began following Hasler’s arrest in March on two counts of distributing child pornography and one count of possessing that illegal material.

The judge could have imposed a sentence between five and 30 years, based on the statutory sentencing guidelines. Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve DeBrota said the defense had asked for less time while the final sentence imposed was near what the government had requested. The judge imposed some sentencing enhancements because of the nature of the crimes and the age of the victims, DeBrota said.
