Constitutional amendment on right to hunt, fish out of committee

A proposal to add the right of Hoosiers to hunt and fish to the Indiana Constitution passed unanimously out of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Natural Resources Monday.

Senate Joint Resolution 7, authored by Sens. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, and Carlin Yoder, R-Middlebury, guarantees the right to hunt, fish, harvest game and engage in agricultural production of meat and dairy. The lawmakers say they believe that hunting, fishing and farming are fundamental parts of the state’s heritage and are worth preserving.

If the General Assembly passes the resolution this year, the proposed amendment will go before voters statewide in 2014.

Seventeen states have passed similar proposals, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

SJR 7 is now before the full Senate for further consideration.
