The longest-serving Lake Superior judge is stepping aside, at least temporarily, effective today, according to an order of the Indiana Supreme Court.

Judge Gerald N. Svetanoff, Lake Superior Civil Division 4, petitioned the Indiana Supreme Court for appointment of a judge pro tem “while he is unable to attend to the duties of his office,” according to the order signed by acting Chief Justice Robert Rucker Sept. 17. Senior Judge E. Duane Daugherty begins serving as judge pro tem effective today.

State court staff and those in Svetanoff’s court could provide no further information, and there was no indication whether Svetanoff’s departure from the bench was temporary.

Svetanoff was appointed to the Lake Superior bench more than 31 years ago. According to the Indiana Roll of Attorneys, Svetanoff was admitted to the practice of law on Sept. 14, 1960. He is listed as active and in good standing.
