Josh J. Minkler, 51, was named Friday to lead the federal prosecutor’s office for the Southern District of Indiana. As acting U.S. attorney, Minkler replaces former U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett, whose final day on the job was Thursday.

Hogsett, considered a likely candidate for the Democratic nomination to run for mayor of Indianapolis, has joined the law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP after earlier this month announcing his resignation.

Minkler served as first assistant U.S. attorney under Hogsett. Joe H. Vaughn will be promoted from criminal chief attorney to first assistant under Minkler.

In addition to serving as the first assistant, Minkler was the drug unit chief and served as an assistant U.S. attorney prosecuting drug, violent crime, and public corruption cases.  He graduated from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 1988 after earning a bachelor’s degree from Wabash College in 1985.
