Legal community rolls up its sleeves for ‘Day of Service’

Once again, members of the Indiana State Bar Association gave up part of their Saturday to help their local communities as part of the association’s Annual Day of Service.

Attorneys and judges around the state volunteered their time Sept. 20 helping veterans, harvesting fresh produce for local food shelters, and cleaning up neighborhoods. In Steuben County, the legal community assisted with a 5K run for literacy and in LaPorte County, legal professionals helped clean up a beach in Michigan City.

The Day of Service was crafted by the ISBA’s inaugural Leadership Development Academy class. First held in 2013, the class members said the goal was to inspire a sense of volunteerism and camaraderie through volunteer activities.

Members of the bench and bar also volunteered in  Allen, Benton, Jasper, Newton, Lake, Marion, St. Joseph and Vanderburgh counties.

The Evansville Bar Association started the Day of Service early by volunteering at the Evansville YMCA’s domestic violence shelter on Sept. 19. The members painted and delivered furniture and redecorated two rooms at the shelter.

“The members have dedicated their time, non-legal talents, and their treasures to support the Evansville YMCA’s domestic violence shelter,” said Jean Blanton, EBA board member and local Day of Service chair. “We are proud of the collective efforts of the members and are pleased to provide support to such a worthwhile cause and strong non-profit in our community.”
