About 800 Indiana health professional, lawmakers, law-enforcement officials and others gathered in Indianapolis Friday for the beginning of a two-day symposium focused on combating prescription drug abuse.

Led by Attorney General Greg Zoeller and the Indiana Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force, the fifth annual Prescription Drug Abuse Symposium is designed to share ideas to reduce abuse of opiates and other addictive prescription drugs. A statement from Zoeller’s office cited a study by Trust for America’s Health finding overdoses in Indiana havequadrupled since 1999.

“Our state is plagued by a national epidemic of people misusing, abusing and overdosing on prescription drugs, especially opioid painkillers,” Zoeller said. “Working to coordinate a systemic approach to address this serious public health concern remains one of my top priorities. A commitment to education, training and policy change by all key players is making a difference in Indiana to stem this deadly trend.”
