Ball State University has named Indianapolis Bar Association Executive Director Julie Armstrong a 2014 recipient of the Indiana Women of Achievement Award. This award is given by the university’s Task Force on the Status of Women each year to five women across the state “who enrich the lives of others through outstanding accomplishments in a variety of fields.” Armstrong and her fellow recipients were recognized at an awards dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Ball State Alumni Center. This is the 15th year for the awards dinner.

Armstrong has served as the executive director of the IndyBar and the Indianapolis Bar Foundation (IBF) since 1995, having initially joined the staff in 1991. During this time, she has guided the association through six strategic plans, gained record membership, tripled the operating budget, directed changes in structure and governance, and added innovative programs and initiatives to the bar’s roster, such as the Bar Leader Series, the annual Diversity Job Fair and the annual Bench Bar Conference. Under Armstrong’s guidance, the IBF has also experienced record growth and was awarded the National Conference of Bar Foundations’ Fundraising for Success Award in 2012 for its Giving Level Improvement Initiative, a concept developed by Armstrong.

“Julie Armstrong is the lifeblood of the IndyBar and the IBF,” notes one of her nominators, Martha S. Hollingsworth of Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP.

In his nomination, IndyBar President Jeffrey Abrams of Benesch Friedlander Coplan & Aronoff LLP said, “I would not have considered the presidency without having an executive director like Julie Armstrong. She is more knowledgeable…on current issues facing the IndyBar, and she is equally insightful in looking forward for our association and associations all across the country.”

The awards dinner recognized Armstrong for Distinction in Legal Services and Administration. Other recipients received the award for Distinction in Science Education, Distinction in Innovative Nursing Education, Distinction in Community Leadership and Distinction in Leadership for Women’s Health and Advocacy.•
