Federal prosecutors have charged a Center Township official in Indianapolis with embezzling tens of thousands of dollars in Social Security payments intended for disabled and elderly recipients.

Prosecutors said Friday that Carmen Batts-Porter, 32, of Indianapolis, embezzled nearly $67,000 from 2010 to 2014. Batts-Porter served as a community business counselor for the Center Township Trustee’s Office and was responsible for administering payments to Social Security recipients who couldn't manage their own money.

This is the second time in six months a Center Township Trustee Office employee has been charged in federal court. In July, the township's former chief financial officer was charged with embezzling nearly $344,000 in Social Security funds.

Former Center Township accountant Alan S. Mizen pleaded guilty in November 2014 to embezzling more than $343,000. In addition to restitution, the state has also asked that Mizen pay  for the cost of the State Board of Accounts investigation into his theft of public funds.
