The central Indiana legal community hopes to reach new fundraising heights in the fifth annual American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb Law Firm Challenge.

Local lawyers, firms, in-house counsel, family and friends may assemble teams and sign up for the March 14 event that challenges participants to climb the 47 flights of the Chase Tower, Indianapolis’ tallest building. Last year’s event raised $30,655, with Bose McKinney & Evans LLP the top fund-raiser for a second straight year.

Quarles & Brady LLP associate Vanessa Davis chairs the Law Firm Challenge and captains the firm’s team. She said this year’s Law Firm Challenge fundraising goal is $35,000. The total Fight for Air goal is $300,000.

Attorneys and firms interested in registering or learning more about the event may do so here. The entry fee is $25 per person, and participants must meet a minimum individual fundraising requirement of $100.

Davis said the event suits the competitive nature of lawyers, some of whom will compete not just for fundraising bragging rights, but also for quickest times to the top. Some train to climb the tower two or three times the day of the event.

“The real goal is to see how much we can raise for this great cause,” she said.

Davis said organizers accommodate participants of all abilities, and many participants choose to walk at a moderate pace and take breaks every few floors.

“It really does run the spectrum. We have participants from children to grandparents,” she said.

Along with bragging rights, the top fund-raising team will host a traveling trophy. Prior to Bose McKinney’s repeat wins, Barnes & Thornburg LLP claimed the trophy in 2012 and Frost Brown Todd LLP won the first event in 2011.

As of Monday, Davis said eight firms had registered for the challenge.
