Workers to touch up golden domes atop Vigo County courthouse

An Ohio company has been hired to touch up gold spots on the domes atop the Vigo County courthouse in Terre Haute and add two layers of protective coating.

Vigo County commissioners have approved $5,000 to pay RK Restoration of Middletown, Ohio, for the work. The project is scheduled to happen this month.

The (Terre Haute) Tribune-Star reported that two years ago commissioners chose to pay $180,000 to repair and seal the domes instead of replace the copper skin. That would have cost $1 million.

The domes’ skin is about 40 years old and has leaked in the past. The 2013 work included replacing more than 2,500 screws because hail dented and punctured the roof and wind gusts loosened seams. Workers also secured an iron catwalk fence around the cupola.
