Those interested in becoming the 109th Indiana Supreme Court justice tentatively have until Jan. 25 to apply. Applications for the vacancy to be created by Justice Brent Dickson’s retirement are now available online.

Dickson will retire in the spring, although a specific date has not yet been determined. He will leave the bench before he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 75 in July.

“Indiana has many qualified lawyers who should seriously consider this public service opportunity. Justice Brent Dickson’s 30-year career exemplified civility and professionalism. One enduring legacy will be to fill his seat with an equally talented attorney,” Chief Justice Loretta Rush said in a release encouraging attorneys to consider applying.

The Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission will interview and select three finalists for the governor to consider for appointment to the bench. Two of the seven members of the commission have terms expiring at the end of this year. Attorneys are currently voting on the lawyer-member replacement; Pence will appoint the other member.

The application is available at courts.in.gov/jud-qual/3306.htm. A candidate must be an Indiana resident and a member of the Indiana bar for 10 years or an Indiana judge for five years. Those interested in applying may contact JNC Counsel, Adrienne Meiring, at 317-232-4706 or [email protected].
