IndyBar:Legal Help Brings Light to Life’s Darkest Moments

  • Print

iba-hospiceWhen fear, worry and pain make life dark, you can be the light. Local hospice patients facing end-of-life legal matters get free assistance from the IndyBar Hospice Program–and we need you to help!

Hospice Program volunteer attorneys assist hospice and palliative care patients through consultations and limited representation at local hospitals. Volunteers are assigned calendar weeks and address all referrals made to the program during that time – typically just three hours of service – 2-4 weeks per year.

Attorneys should be familiar with the basics of end-of-life legal matters and documents, including wills and powers of attorney, but don’t have to have a practice specializing in elder law, estate planning or probate. Attorneys need to reply to each referral within one business day (to confirm availability to assist) and many times the matter must be handled in less than 48 hours (based on discharge/surgery or impending passing). While questions about guardianship or Medicaid may arise and patients will need advice, these are not issues upon which the attorneys will represent the patient.
