The team from Fishers High School was crowned the champion in the Indiana We the People High School competition and will represent the state at the national competition in April 2016.

The state’s We the People finals were held Dec. 13 through 15 in Indianapolis. Students had to testify before panels of volunteer judges, answering questions about the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Fishers’ social studies teacher Elizabeth Paternoster coached the winning team. Now the team will represent Indiana in the national finals April 22 through 25 in Maryland.

Hamilton Southeastern High School, also in Fishers, and Munster High School placed second and third, respectively.

In the We the People middle school competition, Brown County Junior High School in Nashville took first place for the sixth consecutive year. Fishers Junior High School came in second and St. Richard’s Episcopal School in Indianapolis placed third.

For the 2015 state competition, the Indiana Bar Foundation expanded the number of teams by adding two more schools to each of the middle and high school rounds. This brought the total number of teams competing to 28 and bumped up the student participation to 700 individuals.

The bar foundation was pleased with the result.

“We really succeeded in giving more students the opportunity to compete,” said Theresa Browning, the bar foundation’s director of development and communications.
