Dickson retirement date set for April 29

Justice Brent Dickson will retire from the Indiana Supreme Court April 29, he said Monday in a letter to Gov. Mike Pence

Dickson announced last year he would retire months before he would have been forced from the court when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 75 in July. He thanked Pence for his “generous and positive public remarks following that announcement.”

“I trust that today’s naming of April 29 as my retirement date will afford sufficient time for the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission to nominate three candidates for the resulting vacancy, and then thereafter for you to make the final selection,” Dickson wrote in the letter to Pence.

The deadline for applications from lawyers and judges who hope to serve on the state’s high court is Jan. 25. The commission has not yet scheduled dates for public interviews of applicants.

After his appointment to the court in 1986 by Gov. Robert D. Orr, Dickson became the second-longest-tenured justice in Indiana history. He served as chief justice for two years prior to Chief Justice Loretta Rush’s appointment.

“It has been an enormously gratifying experience and privilege to have served the citizens of Indiana and our state judiciary for thirty years,” Dickson wrote.
