First fellowship symposium on consumer law Feb. 19 at IU McKinney

The inaugural Cohen & Malad LLP Consumer Law Fellowship Symposium will be held at Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law Feb. 19. Third-year law student Justin McGiffen is the first student to participate in the fellowship created in 2013.

The event, “Judicial & Legal Perspectives on Consumer Protection,” will include Magistrate Judge Tim Baker of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, who will speak about best practices in federal consumer litigation; and Marion Superior Judge Garry Miller, who will talk about ethics and consumer protection.

The law firm Cohen & Malad established the fellowship in order to promote student interest in working in the field of consumer law. The fellow works with the law school’s pro bono partner organizations or through the law school’s clinical programs to research topics in consumer law, mass torts and class actions. The fellow also must plan and implement a symposium designed to educate the legal community about these issues, and works under the direct supervision of an attorney who is well versed in the area of law the student is interested in studying.

The symposium will be an annual event going forward and there will be a new Consumer Law fellow every year. The fellowship lasts one year and is open to anyone after he or she completes the first year of law school.

The event begins at 1 p.m. in the Inlow Hall Wynne Courtroom. McGiffen will provide an overview of the event. CLE is available for the free event. Registration is required. For more information, visit http://mckinneylaw.iu.edu/events/current.cfm?eid=409.
