The Senate Select Committee on Immigration Issues meets for the fourth time Wednesday, where the committee will discuss national security issues and attendance at Indiana colleges and universities by unauthorized immigrants.

Richard Aguirre from Goshen College is scheduled to discuss why he believes Hoosiers should encourage unauthorized immigrant students to pursue higher education in the state, as well as why he believes it will strengthen the state’s economy.

Michael Cutler, retired senior special agent of the former U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, will testify on immigration issues related to national and state security as well as other topics not listed on the committee’s agenda.

Robert Warren, a senior visiting fellow at the Center for Migration Studies, will discuss the estimated number and characteristics of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. and Indiana.

Two people are also scheduled to share their naturalization experiences.

The agenda is available online. The meeting begins at 1 p.m. in Room 431 of the Statehouse in Indianapolis. Two more meetings are scheduled: one Sept. 21 and the final meeting on Nov. 10.

The committee has previously looked at employment and economic issues surrounding unauthorized immigrants and ways the state can tackle immigration issues.

Sen. Mike Delph, R-Carmel, chairs the committee.
