Teams of middle and high schools students from Indianapolis and the surrounding area dominated the 2016 Indiana We the People State Finals.

Almost 700 teenagers from around Indiana tested their knowledge of the Constitution and American history at the state competition Dec. 11-13 in the Circle City. Teams from Fort Wayne schools were not able to participate this year because inclement weather made the trip to Indianapolis too dangerous.

Cathedral High School in Indianapolis took top honors in the high school We the People contest while Fishers Junior High School in Fishers captured first place in the middle school competition. Both teams will go on to compete in the national invitational, with high school teams from across the country competing April 21-24, 2017, and middle school teams matching wits April 28-May 2, 2017.

Also in the Indiana high school contest, Plainfield High School and Fishers High School placed second and third, respectively. Brown County Junior High School in Nashville came in second and St. Richard’s Episcopal School in Indianapolis was third in the middle school competition.

The We the People program teaches civic competence and responsibilities to students in elementary, middle and high schools. In Indiana, the program is operated by the Indiana Bar Foundation which provides the classroom materials and teacher training along with organizing the regional and state contests.

“We the People students are an inspiration to all who witness this competition,” said Kenneth J. Allen, president of IBF. “Volunteers tell us time and again that these students instill hope and confidence in our next generation of leaders.”
