A prosecutor is seeking life in prison without parole for a southwestern Indiana man charged with fatally choking his 5-year-old son.

Knox County Prosecutor Dirk Carnahan filed his intent to seek the sentence Thursday against 53-year-old Robert J. Baldwin of Vincennes. Baldwin faces charges of murder, strangulation and domestic battery in the slaying of the boy, who died Thursday morning at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. The boy's name hasn't been released.

Police say Baldwin called 911 Tuesday afternoon and told dispatchers he had "killed his son." He remained at his residence until officers arrived. It wasn't immediately clear what triggered the attack.

Carnahan says the Baldwin first beat the boy and then choked him.

Online court records don't list an attorney for Baldwin who might comment on the case.
