Allen County attorneys interested in serving on the state trial court bench have an opportunity to be considered with the coming retirement of Allen Superior Judge Daniel G. Heath, the Indiana Supreme Court announced Tuesday.

Applications to succeed Heath are available here or in the Allen County clerk’s office.

The Allen County Judicial Nominating Commission will select the three most qualified candidates and submit their names to Gov. Eric Holcomb, who will select the next judge. Application forms, including the original and seven copies, must be completed and returned to the county clerk’s office in Fort Wayne by 4:30 p.m. Jan. 5.

The commission will interview applicants at 9 a.m. on Jan. 23 and, if necessary, on Jan. 24, in courtroom 107 of the Allen County Courthouse. Chaired by Justice Steven David, the commission’s members are Holly Brady, Angela Moellering, Paul Sturm, Mark Terrell and Douglas Ulmer. After the commission notifies Holcomb of its nominees, the governor will have 60 days to select the new judge.

Heath, a judge in the Family Relations Division of Allen Superior Court, has announced he will retire on Feb. 28, after more than 20 years on the trial court bench.

Allen County judges have been appointed through merit selection since 1983. State law governing the commission is found in Indiana Code sections 3-33-2-32 to 33-33-2-45.
