Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill has announced the expansion of the office’s Human Trafficking Investigations Unit, a move that comes amid national Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

Hill announced Monday he is assigning additional investigators and attorneys with law enforcement expertise to the unit. The investigators and attorneys come from police and prosecutorial backgrounds, he said, and will provide educational, investigative and prosecutorial support.

“The predators engaging in this deplorable criminal activity need to know they will be sought out, captured and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Hill said in a Monday statement.

The HTIU is designed to raise awareness and educate Hoosiers on trafficking risk factors and recruitment techniques, and to fight trafficking crimes statewide, the AG’s office said. Human trafficking can come in two forms — labor trafficking or sex trafficking.

Labor trafficking criminals tend to victimize immigrants, while sex traffickers focus on women and children as young as 12, the AG’s office said.

“Victims trapped in this illegal enterprise who are desperate for a better way of life need to know there is help and hope,” Hill said.

The National Human Trafficking Resource Center is available at 1-888-373-7888. In Indiana, educators and businesses interested in collaborating with the HTIU can email outreach coordinator Matt Row.
