The vote to send to the full U.S. Senate James Sweeney II’s nomination to be a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District was delayed Thursday by the Senate’s Committee on the Judiciary.

Sweeney, a partner at Barnes & Thornburg in Indianapolis, was among four candidates for the federal bench who were held over at the request of Democrats. The other nominees who had their votes pushed back were Kurt Engelhardt for the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals; Barry Ashe for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana; and Howard Nielson Jr., for the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.

According to committee rules, any member may request that a nomination be held over until the next meeting or for one week, whichever is later.

President Donald Trump nominated Sweeney in November to fill the vacancy created after Judge Sarah Evans Barker retired and assumed senior judge status.
