Brother of deadly house blast plotter says “good riddance”

The brother of the man authorities considered the mastermind behind a deadly 2012 Indianapolis house explosion said he has no sympathy over his death.

Bob Leonard told WXIN-TV that his life and those of the neighborhood residents “would have been better off” if Mark Leonard had died from a life-threatening blood disorder months before the blast at his then-girlfriend’s home that killed two neighbors and destroyed or damaged about 80 homes in the south side Richmond Hill neighborhood.

Mark Leonard, 48, died of natural causes, Indiana Department of Correction spokesman Doug Garrison said Tuesday. He said Leonard, who like his brother Bob was serving a life sentence without parole, died at an Indianapolis hospital after being transferred from the Wabash Valley Correction Facility in southwestern Indiana. The department initially said Mark Leonard was found dead at the prison, but later clarified he died at the hospital.

An autopsy was planned Wednesday.

Bob Leonard said his brother told him during a recent infirmary visit that he didn’t mean to get him in trouble with the explosion plot for insurance money. Still, Bob Leonard says “good riddance” about his brother.
