Electronic filing now covers 90 percent of Indiana trial courts and nearly 80 percent of the state’s caseload is now handled through the Odyssey case management system, the Indiana Supreme Court highlighted Monday with the release of its annual report.

The annual report includes a broad statistical overview of the work of the court during the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Here are some of the key stats in the 58-page report:

• The court received 845 cases in the last year, 40 fewer than in the prior fiscal year and the lowest total in the past five fiscal years. Civil cases, however, increased 12 percent while criminal cases declined 11 percent.

• Fifty-one percent of the cases the court received were criminal cases, 32 percent were civil cases and 11 percent were attorney discipline. The remainder were original actions or other case types.

• Justices granted transfer in less than 10 percent of all cases and in less than 7.5 percent of criminal cases.

• The court reached consensus in 84 percent of opinions. Justice Steven David most frequently dissented — six dissents compared with 11 majority opinions — and newest justice Christopher Goff has yet to dissent from a majority opinion.

• The courts website had more than 12 million page views in the last fiscal year.

• Fifty-four percent of non-exempt attorneys reported pro bono service, contributing more than 448,000 hours at no charge and donating cash or in-kind contributions worth $1,276,245.
