Longtime Indianapolis real estate development attorney Barbara A. Wolenty is being remembered as a talented but tough dealmaker, spirited and gifted friend, well-regarded adviser and beloved mother and wife. Wolenty died Oct. 2 at age 62 after battling cancer.

Wolenty had been a partner at Robinson Wolenty & Young, LLP, since 2001, after previously setting out in practice as Robinson & Wolenty with law partner Steve Robinson in 1994. Robinson remembered Wolenty with a poem he read at her funeral on Monday. She was laid to rest at Crown View Cemetery in Sheridan.

Barbara A. (Anderson) Wolenty was born in Chicago and was raised in Hammond, graduating from Gavit High School in 1974, according to her obituary. She graduated from Purdue University in 1978 and obtained her law degree from what is now known as Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1982. She then joined the predecessor firm to Wooden McLaughlin LLP, becoming the first woman to make partner at the firm.
Wolenty loved the practice of law and the challenge of representing clients “putting a deal” together, her obituary said. She developed longstanding, respected and close relationships with clients she represented as well as other attorneys with whom she worked.

She is survived by her husband of nearly 40 years, Ronald Wolenty; son, Edward Wolenty and his wife, Sarah (Walter) Wolenty; and her father, Professor Clayton Anderson. Barbara was preceded in death by her mother Pricilla (Waitt) Anderson. Memorial contributions may be made to Indiana University Simon Cancer Center.
