Two Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law deans have taken on new roles at the law school and at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Assistant dean of student affairs Johnny Pryor and assistant dean of professional development Chasity Thompson both stepped into new positions this week.

IUPUI appointed Pryor as the campus’ new assistant vice chancellor for the Division of Student Affairs. In his new role, Pryor will provide leadership and oversee the planning and administration of campus recreation, counseling and psychological services, educational partnerships and student success, health and wellness promotion and student health services.

“I know first-hand the profound impact that educators and mentors make in the lives of students and their post-graduate trajectory, and I'm excited about the opportunity to return to focusing on issues and questions that impact the undergraduate student experience,” Pryor told Indiana Lawyer.

Pryor noted that after working for the law school for more than eight years, he now looks forward to working on initiatives at the campus level to remove barriers to student success and create intentional environments and experiences that promote exploration, learning and a sense of belonging.

“When students feel that they are valued and supported, they are more likely to connect with peers, professors, mentors, engage in campus activities and thrive,” he said.

While at IU McKinney, Pryor led the implementation of a new advising model for J.D. students, established new orientation programs and spearheaded IU McKinney's student wellness program. He also co-founded the National Association of Law Student Affairs Professionals and chaired its second annual conference at IU McKinney during summer 2018.

“I'm grateful to Dean Klein and the McKinney School of Law Office of Student Affairs who supported my efforts and vision in promoting a culture of wellness and building a sense of community among law students, faculty and staff,” Pryor said. His last day at the law school was Jan. 11.

Stepping in to fill the role left by Pryor, Thompson will now serve as the law school’s interim assistant dean for student affairs. After graduating law school in 2002, Thompson spent two years as a judicial clerk to former Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard.

Thompson currently serves as one of five representatives for the state of Indiana on the American Bar Association House of Delegates. Additionally, she serves on the Board of Governors for the Indiana State Bar Association and the board of directors for the Indianapolis Bar Association.
