Three Lake County magistrate judges have been selected as finalists to fill a vacancy on the northwestern Indiana county’s superior court bench.

Lake Superior Magistrate Judge Michael N. Pagano and Lake Circuit magistrate judges Lisa A. Berdine and Stephen E. Scheele were nominated Wednesday by the Lake County Judicial Nominating Commission to succeed Judge William E. Davis, who retired last month. Gov. Eric Holcomb will have 60 days from his official receipt of the nominations to select the new Lake Superior judge from among the finalists.

The nine-member commission chaired by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Slaughter interviewed 11 candidates Wednesday who applied to fill the vacancy, then chose the finalists after deliberating.

Lake — along with Allen, Marion and St. Joseph counties — uses a merit-based selection system for judgeship appointments to its superior court bench.
