Attorney's kidnapper nets 60-year sentence

February 3, 2009

The man who abducted his attorney in July 2008 has been sentenced to 60 years in the Indiana Department of Correction.

Richard Hudson, 53, tied up Anderson attorney Thomas Hamer and abducted him after he decided he didn't want to go back to jail. Hamer had been representing Hudson in a Social Security disability hearing in Indianapolis just prior to the kidnapping. Hudson eventually let the attorney go and stole his car.

Hudson pleaded guilty but mentally ill Monday in Madison Superior Court 1 to kidnapping as a Class A felony and armed robbery as a Class B felony. A $10,000 fine was imposed, and Hudson was also ordered to pay $350 in restitution to Hamer.
