Legislators meet for Organization Day

November 16, 2010

Today is the 2011 Organization Day for Indiana lawmakers, typically a ceremonial day. But one tradition was slightly altered due to Secretary of State Todd Rokita’s absence.

Chief Justice Randall T. Shepard called the House to order today instead of Rokita, who is attending the new member congressional orientation in Washington, D.C. Rokita was recently elected U.S. Representative for District 4. Statute dictates that if the Secretary of State is not available, then the chief justice of the Indiana Supreme Court, or an associate justice designated by the chief justice, will preside over Organization Day proceedings. This is the first time Chief Justice Shepard has done so, said Supreme Court public information officer Kathryn Dolan.

Indiana senators and representatives spent today electing leaders and organizing priorities for the upcoming long session that begins in January. More coverage will be in the Nov. 24 issue of Indiana Lawyer.
