UPL victims urged to claim refunds

August 5, 2011

The Office of the Indiana Attorney General is asking the victims of the United Financial Systems unauthorized practice of law case to apply soon if they want to receive restitution.

Although the deadline to apply for the court-ordered restitution is Oct. 15, the AG’s office urges people to apply as quickly as possible because funds, if received, may be limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Indiana Supreme Court determined  in April 2010 that certain business practices of United Financial – such as selling estate plans – violated Indiana’s rules against the unauthorized practice of law. The justices ordered the company to refund fees to the 1,300 victims.

Victims were sent letters this week to notify them that the attorney general’s office will distribute the restitution. Those who believe they are owed refunds but do not have a prepaid claim card from the AG’s office should contact the Consumer Protection Division at 317-232-6330.
