Former Civil Rights Commission director, MCBA president dies

Sandra Leek, who ran the Indiana Civil Rights Commission for 13 years, died Oct. 12 after battling cancer. She was 58.

Leek was also a former president of the Marion County Bar Association and life member of the group.

Leek, a native of Gary, received her law degree from Indiana University Maurer School of Law and was admitted to the bar in 1979. She was appointed by Gov. Evan Bayh in 1992 to lead the Indiana Civil Rights Commission; she stepped down in 2005. She practiced law at Baker & Daniels LLP after leaving the state agency, and most recently at the Law Offices of Sandra D. Leek & Associates in Indianapolis.

Visitation will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stuart Mortuary, 2201 N. Illinois St., Indianapolis. A celebration of life service is at 1 p.m. Friday at Witherspoon Presbyterian Church, 5136 Michigan Road, Indianapolis. A viewing will be held at the church from noon to 1 p.m. before the service.
