First Child Services Oversight Committee meeting Wednesday

July 26, 2013

The Child Services Oversight Committee, established by the Indiana General Assembly specifically to keep tabs on the Indiana Department of Child Services, will hold its first meeting July 31.

Former judge Mary Beth Bonaventura, director of the Indiana Department of Child Services, will be introduced to the committee. She will also be one of the committee’s 11 members.

As part of the inaugural meeting, the committee will review DCS quarterly report data and the 2012 annual report of the DCS ombudsman bureau as well as get an update on the regional hotline centers.

The meeting will start at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Senate Chamber of the Indiana State House.

Senate Enrolled Act 125, authored by Sens. Travis Holdman, R-Markle, and John Broden, D-South Bend, created the oversight committee and the Commission on Improving the Status of Children in Indiana to replace the Department of Child Services Interim Study Committee.

In addition to reviewing annual and quarterly reports, the committee is charged with making recommendations and submitting an annual report to the Commission on Improving the Status of Children.

Sen. Carlin Yoder, R-Middlebury, will chair the Child Services Oversight Committee.
