Criminal code study committee sets 2 December meeting dates

November 25, 2013

The Criminal Law and Sentencing Policy Study Committee will hold two final meetings in December – Dec. 10 and 19 – to look at funding and sentencing.

Although the overhaul of the state’s criminal code was passed during the 2013 session, the Indiana General Assembly left the issue of funding and sentencing for legislators to deal with in the 2014 session.

The December meetings will allow committee members to hear the results of two studies that are expected to provide a better picture of the financial aspect of the revision of the criminal code. The committee enlisted the assistance of Applied Research Group to study the effect of sentencing changes contained in the new code on the Department of Correction. Roger Jarjoura, principal researcher at the American Institutes for Research, is analyzing the impact of the changes on the local criminal justice system. The results of these reports will allow committee members to make informed decisions about sentencing and funding, members say.

The meetings are scheduled for 10 a.m. in Room 130 of the Statehouse.
