Electronic devices must be turned off in Southern District courtrooms

June 5, 2014

If you plan on bringing your mobile phone, tablet or any other electronic device into court in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Indiana, make sure you turn it off. That’s an order from Chief Judge Richard Young.

Young issued the order May 29 that requires any electronic device capable of audio or video recording to be turned off, and not simply silenced. There are exceptions for ceremonial proceedings.

The order was released in an effort to increase compliance with Judicial Conference policy Rule 53 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, which prohibits photographs or video within a courtroom during judicial proceedings. Keeping devices off also mitigates interference with sensitive courtroom sound equipment, according to the court.

The order does not apply to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Indiana.
