The Democrat told reporters in separate interviews Monday that he plans to file paperwork soon to set up an exploratory committee. He says the violent crime plaguing Indianapolis has prompted his interest in a running.
Hogsett was barred from campaigning until his resignation as U.S. attorney took effect Thursday. He joined the law firm Bose McKinney & Evans LLP after leaving office.
Incumbent Mayor Greg Ballard, a Republican, is expected to seek a third term. Two other Democrats also are running: state Rep. Ed DeLaney and Washington Township Trustee Frank Short.
Marion County Republican Chairman Kyle Walker issued a statement calling Hogsett "a career politician who has run for five different offices and has now broken a pledge to serve the rest of a term of office."
