Longtime Indianapolis attorney Talmage Hager “T.H.” St. Clair has died at the age of 83, his family announced.

Hager passed away May 27 in Indianapolis.

St. Clair, known to friends and family as Hager, was a partner at the predecessor to Lewis Wagner LLP, Lewis Bowman St. Clair and Wagner, where he represented a wide range of clients including Wilma Mankiller, chief of the Cherokee Tribe, and the ABA-era Indiana Pacers, among others. Prior to his work at the law firm, St. Clair worked in the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office under Nobel Piercy, handling civil rights and housing discrimination cases.

St. Clair began his legal career in 1965, when he graduated from the Indiana University Law School. Prior to the beginning of his legal career, St. Clair served in the U.S. Navy under then-Admiral John McCain, then went on to earn his degree at Indiana Central College, known today as the University of Indianapolis.

Though he moved to Indianapolis as a young boy in the 1930s, St. Clair later moved his home to Brown County, where he participated in activities outside of the law, such as tracking eastern bluebirds, practicing Tabata, playing piano and teaching himself the Chinese language. St. Clair also had an interest in sports and was recruited as a teenager by Indiana Basketball Hall of Famer Frank Baird to play multiple sports for Broad Ripple High School.

St. Clair is survived by his wife since 1958, Doreen, his children, Jeffrey and Jennifer, and two grandchildren. The family requests donations be made in the name of T.H. St. Clair to the Frank Baird Scholarship Fund, care of Jack Engledow, 1819 Wood Valley Dr., Carmel, 46032, or to the Brown County YMCA, 105 Willow St., Nashville, 47448.
