Subscribe NowThe former president of the Supreme Court of Israel will give a presentation this week on the issue of human dignity in the context of the law at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington.
Aharon Barak will launch the IU Institute for Advanced Study’s 2016-2017 Remak Seminar with a presentation on his book, “Human Dignity: The Constitutional Value and the Constitutional Right” at noon Thursday in the Moot Court Room of the law school. Barak’s presentation will kick off the institute’s “Dignity, Equality, and Social Justice” seminar series.
Barak, who is also a law professor at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel, and a law lecturer at several schools in Israel and the United States, will discuss his book via video chat with Steve Sanders, associate professor of law at IU Maurer and leader of the 2016-2017 Remak Seminar. Barak and Sanders’ discussion will focus on the concept of human dignity and how having a strong grasp on that concept can provide a clearer understanding of the practice of the law.
“Critical examination of dignity can connect us with significant legal and philosophical debates of the past while informing discourse on urgent contemporary controversies such as institutional racism, criminal justice, immigration policy, voting rights, health policy, religious liberty and LGBT equality,” Sanders said in a statement.
Barak’s lecture is free and open to the public. Sanders and other leaders of the seminar series have plans to archive video recordings of Barak’s and other presentations online in the near future.
