ACLU of Indiana planning 60th anniversary celebration

April 9, 2013

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana will be marking a major milestone by meeting at a historic site.

The celebration, “60th Anniversary: Return to the Indiana War Memorial,” will be from 6 to 7:30 pm., Wednesday, April 10 at the Indiana War Memorial, 431 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis.

Speakers include Louise Melling, ACLU deputy legal director and Dawn Johnsen, national board member of the American Constitution Society of Law and Policy and professor at Indiana University Maurer School of Law.

The Indiana War Memorial retains a special significance for the ACLU of Indiana. When the group sought to hold its first meeting there on Nov. 20, 1953, it was barred over concerns the organization had Communist ties. A decades-long legal battle ensued with the Indiana Supreme Court ruling on Feb. 1, 1973, that the law protects public use of the War Memorial.
