Two Indiana teams ranked among the top 10 after participating in the championship round of the We The People national competition.

The three-day event, held in Washington, D.C., started with high school teams representing 45 states. By the final day of the competition on Monday only 10 teams were left, including two from Indiana.

After the championship round, Cathedral High School in Indianapolis placed fifth in the nation and Plainfield High School in Hendricks County placed 10th.

This was the first time in the program’s history that Indiana had two teams competing in the top 10 of the national finals. Cathedral went to the nationals as the winner of the state’s We The People competition and Plainfield filled a wildcard slot.

“Having two teams in the top 10 is a testament to the depth of talent in our state and the quality of teachers in the program,” Charles Dunlap, executive director of the Indiana Bar Foundation, stated in a press release.

The foundation operates the We The People program in Indiana.

The national competition mimics a Congressional hearing. Students prepare testimony and answer questions about the Constitutional issues involved in current and historical events. The civic education program develops the students’ skills in critical thinking, teamwork, public speaking and research.
