Personal and business bankruptcy filings increased 10% nationally in the 12-month period that ended in June, according to data from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts.

In Indiana, the Northern District saw an increase of 7.7% in filings, and the Southern District had an increase of 3.4%. That follows a dip in the state’s filings for the previous 12-month period that ended March 31.

Of the 167 business filings in Indiana across both districts, Marion County had the most with 35. Three other counties — Allen, Lake and Hamilton— had more than 10.

Of the state’s 13,768 nonbusiness filings, Lake County had the most with 1,645. Also in the Northern District, Allen County had 875 and Porter County 492. In the Southern District, Marion County had the most with 2,506, Vanderburgh County had 488 and Johnson County had 325.

For the 7th Circuit, filings were up 8.3%, with the largest increase coming from the Illinois Northern District at 15.2%. The only dip in the 7th Circuit came from the Wisconsin Western District, which saw a 5.8% decrease.
