One hack, 106 million people, Capital One ensnared by breach

A security breach at Capital One Financial, one of the nation’s largest issuers of credit cards, compromised the personal information of about 106 million people, and in some cases the alleged hacker, who has been arrested, obtained Social Security and bank account numbers.

Fort Wayne man wants to withdraw plea in toddler’s death

A northeastern Indiana man wants to withdraw his guilty plea to neglect in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter. Shane Patton of Fort Wayne appeared in court Tuesday and was ordered held until Aug. 13, when a hearing is scheduled for him on bond and to assign a new public defender.

Lack of counsel for father overturns adoption decree

Tax sale for which landowner wasn’t given notice reversed

The LaPorte County auditor’s failure to check records that would have revealed the actual address of a Michigan City property owner whose land was sold without notice for back taxes was a denial of constitutional due process, the Indiana Court of Appeals ruled Tuesday. The appeals court reinstated the landowner’s challenge to the tax sale results and remanded the case.

Appeal from the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, Indianapolis Division. Senior Judge Sarah Evans Barker.
Civil. Vacates the entry of summary judgement in favor of Covance, Inc. against Damon Stepp in his retaliation and discrimination lawsuit. Finds a reasonable jury could conclude that Covance refused to promote Stepp to permanent status because of his complaints. Remands.

Carmel attorney’s misrepresentation leads to 180-day suspension

South Bend attorney’s discipline converted to indefinite suspension

The Indiana Supreme Court has moved to indefinitely suspend a South Bend attorney who was suspended earlier this year for her noncooperation with a disciplinary investigation of a grievance against her.
