Judgment reversed for woman who posted bond, then fatally shot defendant

A dispute over who should receive bond money paid on behalf of a now-deceased defendant will proceed in court after the Indiana Court of Appeals reversed summary judgment for the woman who posted the bond then fatally shot the man.

 

Supreme Court asked to take up ‘Serial’ podcast murder case

Lawyers for a Maryland man whose murder conviction was chronicled in the hit podcast “Serial” are asking the Supreme Court to step into the case. Lawyers for defendant Adnan Syed said in court papers Monday that the justices should order a new trial for Syed and reverse a Maryland court ruling against him.

Lawrence County sheriff’s deputy fatally shoots armed man

Southern Indiana police say a sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a man who had refused to disarm after he reportedly fired gunshots. The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office says 62-year-old Mike Parsley of Springville was pronounced dead at the scene of Saturday night’s shooting.

Jury selection begins for Clark County man accused of murder, cannibalism

Jury selection began Monday in the trial of a southern Indiana man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and eating parts of her body nearly five years ago. Prosecutors say Joseph Oberhansley, 38, broke into the Jeffersonville home of his 46-year-old ex-girlfriend, Tammy Jo Blanton, in September 2014, and then raped her, fatally stabbed her and ate parts of her body.

Civil. Affirms the entry of summary judgment against Christopher Regan and Northwest Indiana Creative Investors Association Inc. Finds the city of Hammond’s licensing ordinance does not discriminate based on the domicile of a homeowner in name or effect and has the support of a rational basis, so it poses no problem under the dormant commerce clause.

Ford dealership’s undisclosed finance charge not an ‘additional charge,’ COA holds

The Indiana Court of Appeals has affirmed a finding that a Ford dealership failed to disclose a $25 convenience fee for its credit customers as a finance charge. It also reversed an Indiana Department of Financial Institutions’ finding that because the fee was not disclosed in the finance charge box, it must be an additional charge.

Jury convicts Indiana woman in crash that killed daughter, 6

An eastern Indiana woman has been convicted of neglect and other charges stemming from a highway crash that killed her 6-year-old daughter. A Delaware County jury convicted 30-year-old Jessica Skeens of seven of nine charges Thursday, including neglect of a dependent resulting in death and driving while intoxicated.

Gary police fatally shoot man during traffic stop

Police in northwestern Indiana have fatally shot a man during a traffic stop. The Lake County Coroner’s Office issued a news release identifying the man as 25-year-old Rashad Cunningham.

Fire department suspends Indianapolis lawmaker facing charges

The Indianapolis Fire Department has suspended a state legislator who was arrested for drunken driving. The department said Friday that Democratic Rep. Dan Forestal has been suspended for 240 duty hours and remanded to an employee assistance program.
