Indiana election upgrade leaves widespread paperless voting

Indiana officials are launching a statewide election system upgrade that will add devices to perhaps 2,000 electronic voting machines and allow them to display a paper record to voters. The State Budget Committee voted Friday to approve releasing $6 million in funding for that project.

2 accused of abandoning adopted girl appear in Indiana court

A couple accused of abandoning their adopted daughter in an Indiana apartment and moving to Canada have made their first court appearance. A Tippecanoe County judge entered not guilty pleas Friday on behalf 43-year-old Michael Barnett and 45-year-old Kristine Barnett.

Man pleads guilty to providing gun used in Boone County deputy’s killing

A man accused of providing a handgun used to kill a central Indiana sheriff’s deputy has pleaded guilty to all but one of the charges he’d faced. John Ball, 23, pleaded guilty Friday in Boone County to five drug-related charges and a charge of providing a firearm to an ineligible person.

Justice Department supports archdiocese’s right to fire teacher in same-sex marriage

The U.S. Justice Department filed a statement in court Friday saying the Archdiocese of Indianapolis was within its rights when it fired a Cathedral High School teacher in a same-sex marriage. The Justice Department’s so-called “statement of interest” said the First Amendment prevents courts from impairing the constitutional rights of religious institutions.

Summit to address pretrial release practices as bail reform looms

Affirms Jeremy Ellis’ convictions of Level 4 felony manufacturing methamphetamine, Level 6 felony possession of meth and Level 6 felony possession of precursors, and his aggregate eight-year sentence. Finds the Lagrange Superior Court did not err by admitting evidence found as a result of the pat down search. Also finds Ellis’ sentence is not inappropriate in light of the nature of the offenses or his character.

Attorney who brought body cam, knife to court cleared of misconduct allegations

A western Indiana man has been convicted in the fatal shooting of a homeless man he suspected of vandalizing his classic automobile. A Vigo County jury found 49-year-old Clarence Bell Jr. guilty of murder Thursday in 37-year-old Raymond Rose’s September 2018 killing.

Indiana mom who tampered with son’s IV guilty of battery, neglect

A northwestern Indiana woman who admitted injecting fecal matter into her son’s IV tube while he was hospitalized for leukemia has been convicted of neglect and six counts of aggravated battery. Tiffany Alberts, 44, Wolcott, was found not guilty of attempted murder during a Marion County bench trial that ended Thursday.
