A new magistrate judge has been selected in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana to succeed retiring Magistrate Judge Paul R. Cherry.

The Northern District Court announced Monday that Joshua P. Kolar would fill the vacancy. Kolar was among 43 applicants for the judgeship opening screened by the Magistrate Judge Merit Selection Committee comprised of lawyers and nonlawyers. Kolar was selected by the judges on the court from the five finalists.

As a magistrate judge, Kolar will conduct most preliminary proceedings in criminal cases and preside over hearings and the trial in civil cases and misdemeanor cases with the consent of all parties. At the request of district judges, he will also handle pretrial motions and attempts to resolve civil cases short of trial.

“He has the intellect, demeanor and practicality that will make him an outstanding magistrate judge,” Chief Judge Theresa L. Springmann said in the announcement.

Kolar is a graduate of Northwestern University and the Northwestern University School of Law. He has served as an assistant U.S. attorney for more than 11 years and has practiced civil and criminal law during his career, handling national security, public corruption, fraud, narcotics and tax investigations. Kolar also served as an officer in the United States Naval Reserve for almost nine years, holding the rank of lieutenant.

Kolar will serve an eight-year term and will then be eligible for reappointment. He will take office January 1, 2019.
