Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb appointed a magistrate judge and former deputy prosecutor to a judicial vacancy in the Porter Circuit Court, his office announced Wednesday.

DeBoer

Holcomb selected Mary DeBoer as his appointment to succeed Porter Circuit Court Judge Mary Harper, who will retire from the courthouse on Dec. 31. Harper holds the distinction of being the longest-serving woman in the Indiana judiciary, serving for 35 years on the trial court bench.

DeBoer has served as a magistrate judge for the Porter County Superior Courts in Valparaiso since 2011. She previously served as a deputy prosecutor in Starke and Porter counties and was in private practice. DeBoer earned her law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law and was admitted to the Indiana Bar in 1993.

DeBoer will be sworn into office on a date to be determined, Holcomb’s office said.

Along with the retirement of veteran judge Harper, the northwestern Indiana county also will lose its longest-serving jurist — Porter Superior 1 Judge Roger Bradford, who also plans to retire next year. According to the Indiana Supreme Court, Bradford, a judge for more than 40 years, is the second-longest tenured Indiana trial court judge behind only Lake Superior Judge Nicholas Schiralli, who has been on the bench 43 years.
