Gov. Eric Holcomb announced the appointment Friday.
Schutte began his legal career in 2003 as a deputy prosecutor in the Vanderburgh County Prosecutor’s Office in Evansville. When he left to become a magistrate judge July 1, 2019, he was serving as the chief deputy prosecutor.
According to the governor’s office, Schutte earned both his undergraduate degree and law degree from Indiana University.
Schutte will be sworn in as the judge of the Vanderburgh County Superior Court on a date to be determined. His appointment comes more than seven months after Holcomb requested applications in January, when Tornatta announced he would step down.
