Joseph Vannote Jr., 13, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Madison Superior Court in the death of Mark Miles, 61, of Anderson.
Andrew Hanna, Madison County’s chief deputy prosecutor, said in a news release that his office has requested that Vannote’s case be waived to adult court.
“I take the view that if you’re old enough to know what you’re doing and you intentionally take the life of another person, we’re going to try you as an adult. Anytime you see juveniles associated or charged with offenses like this, it’s extremely concerning and disheartening,” Hanna said.
Bryan Williams, who served as Vannote’s counsel, could not immediately be reached for comment by The Indiana Lawyer.
A probable cause affidavit in the case says police questioned Vannote at the time of the incident and the teen admitted he attempted to rob Miles and stabbed the man with a knife he grabbed from Miles’ kitchen.
Madison Superior Court Judge Mark Dudley has set Vannote’s sentencing for July 1 at 10 a.m.
Vannote’s defense counsel is requesting alternative juvenile sentencing. The state is requesting the defendant be sentenced as an adult.
If he’s sentenced as an adult, he faces a possible sentence of 45-65 years, Hanna said.
