District judge’s robing ceremony Friday

Hon. William T. Lawrence, the newest judge in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, will be formally sworn in tomorrow at the federal courthouse in Indianapolis.

Judge Lawrence, who previously served as magistrate judge, was appointed by President George W. Bush to replace Judge John D. Tinder, who was elevated to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Judge Lawrence was unanimously confirmed as a District judge by the U.S. Senate in June. The judge is the first magistrate judge in the Southern District to be elevated to the District Court.

The ceremony begins at 3 p.m. in the William E. Steckler Ceremonial Courtroom, Room 202, Birch Bayh Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse, 46 E. Ohio St., Indianapolis. The ceremony is a public event, but seating is limited.
