The new courthouse will have 14,000 square feet of rentable space and will house the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District, clerks' offices for both courts, U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District, U.S. Probation Office, and U.S. Marshals Service.
U.S. General Services Administration spokesperson David Wilkinson said the reason for the construction is two-fold. The post office, which shared space with the federal courts, wanted more space for postal operations and will move into a separate building. Also, the current federal building no longer meets the security requirements for federal buildings, Wilkinson said.
Once the new federal courthouse is complete, the existing one will be converted by Indiana State University for academic use.
