A man expressed remorse for killing another state hospital patient before a judge sentenced him to 55 years imprisonment.

Thirty-one-year-old Daniel Davis, formerly of Indianapolis, apologized in court Monday to the family 59-year-old Charles "Rick" Boyer. Boyer was found dead on Sept. 1, 2013, in the room the two shared at Richmond State Hospital.

Davis pleaded guilty but mentally ill to a murder charge in the beating death. A probable cause affidavit said he was diagnosed as mildly intellectually disabled.

The Palladium-Item reported hospital officials told police that Davis and Boyer had been roommates for several months and no prior incidents had occurred.

Boyer's sister, Tyrenna Ball, testified he "was a sweet, kind man" who enjoyed nature, fishing and holidays. After the hearing, she said the sentence was "adequate."
